Design and write a postcard

Writing in book

Did you know that over half of children don’t write postcards when they go on holiday? But those that do are more likely to enjoy writing. Sending a postcard is a good chance to practise writing in the holidays.

  • Cut an A4 piece of plain paper in half so it is roughly postcard-sized.
  • Ask your child to draw a picture of their holiday on one side. It could be a drawing of your holiday, of their favourite day of the summer or a picture from a book. It doesn’t matter what, just as long as they’re being creative!
  • They can then write a message on the other side. Use this to explain what they’ve drawn or say what they’ve been up to recently. Why not ask them to draw it for a family member and then put it in the post? Show them how to start the postcard: “Dear…”. And show them how to write the address and where to put the stamp.

It doesn’t matter if they haven’t been away during the summer - they can send it from home.

Or you can ask them to use their imagination and send a postcard from their dream holiday. What would they do? Swim with dolphins, climb a mountain, lie on a beach?
