Victoria Jamieson

What books did you read when you were a child?
My very favorite books as a child were the Ramona Quimby books by Beverly Cleary. I also loved Superfudge by Judy Blume, and pretty much every single book by Roald Dahl!

If you could be a storybook character who would you be?
I think it would be pretty fun to be Matilda. As a kid I tested myself frequently for telekinesis.

What is the best thing about reading?
I love being transported to a different world, while I’m really sitting on the bus, a plane, or on the sofa. That’s kind of a superpower.

What is your all time favourite book?
Ramona Quimby, Age 8. I loved it as an 8-year-old, and I love it now.

Other than reading books what is the most important thing a parent can do to help develop their children’s communication skills?
I wasn’t a big talker as a kid, but I loved to write and draw. I try to encourage the kids I meet in their communications, no matter what form that takes.

How big a part did your parents play in encouraging your writing skills?
My mom was both a children’s librarian and an art teacher, so she definitely encouraged me to read and draw! My dad worked in an office and he always made sure to bring home scrap paper for me and my two brothers.

How do you encourage your children or grandchildren to read, what books do you enjoy reading with them?
My son is only 2 years old, and much to my chagrin he hates story time at the library! He will listen to books about things he already enjoys, however, like trains, numbers, or Hopping On Pop.
