Chat to your baby in your own language

The best way to help your child learn to speak is to talk to them as much as possible in your own language – it doesn’t have to be English. If they speak confidently, they will be ready to learn English when they start at nursery or school.

You can talk to your baby in your own language about what you’re doing together. It could be part of your daily routine, like bath time or changing their nappy.

Have fun with rhymes, poems and songs in your own language, and tell your child stories too. Encourage them to join in with the story.

Try to find books written in your language for your child or try making your own. Looking at books lots will build a love of reading in them.

Encourage your child to play with children who speak the same language as they do.

Don’t laugh or tease your child if they make mistakes or have a different accent.

If they speak more than one language, teach them the names of the languages. Talk to your child about what they did at playgroup or nursery in your language. If they use English words, repeat what they said in your language. But do not correct them or force them to use your language. All this helps your child feel proud of your language
