Reading books with your child

Reading books with your child

You can make reading time fun and interactive for your child. Encourage them to choose their favourite book when you sit down together for story time.

As you go through the story, point to pictures on the page. You can name things, count things or ask questions.

Questions like: “Where are the ducks?”, “How many butterflies are there?”, or “Where is the dog going?”.

Once your child knows the book well, they can start to join in and copy you. Ask them to point to things, or maybe name colours or what’s happening. Praise them when they join in.

Good to know

Your child will learn new words as they discover the connection between what you’re saying and the pictures in books.
