Help your child use their imagination and create a make-believe creature during this fun game.
What you'll need:
- Dice
- Some paper
- Coloured pens or pencils
If you don’t have dice, don’t worry! Just write numbers 1 to 6 on little pieces of paper, put them in a bag and pick them out at random.
Step one: Invent your creature
Ask your child to roll the die and use the grid below to see what kind of creature they can make. Roll once each for body, legs and head. You can add different animals to the grid if you like!
Step two: Draw your creature
Now it's time to get creative and bring your creature to life on the page! Don't forget to make it fun and colourful!
Step three: Label your creature
Ask your child to describe the creature’s body parts and how they might help it in the wild.
- Is it furry? Scaly? Skinny?
- Does it run, swim or hop?
- Is it cute? Scary? Shy?
- What does it eat?
- Where did you discover it?
- Does it like humans?
Step four: Give your creature a name
Finally, your child’s creature needs a name! This can be a mash-up of the animals that have inspired their creature’s body parts, or a completely new name.
Bonus activity: If your little one enjoyed this activity, you can use it to encourage them to practice their writing too.
- Tell them they are an explorer who discovered the creature.
- Ask them to write a diary entry about the day they discovered it.
- Where were they?
- How did they find it?
