Chatting with your child this winter will help build their language and communication skills from the very start.
Try to get outside and make the most of winter moments together. Every little moment will make a big difference.
Why go for a winter walk?
The changing seasons offer a great opportunity to introduce new words. Head outside and chat about the things your child notices around them. You could try going out when it starts to get dark too. See if you can spot sparkly lights and other festive decorations.
Remember, you don’t have to find extra time for these activities. You can complete them on the walk to the bus stop, or to nursery, whenever you’ve got plans to be out and about!
Things to talk about when on a winter walk
- Chat about the warm clothes they’re wearing. Encourage older children to dress themselves and describe what they’re doing.
- Pay attention to and talk about the things they notice. If they say the names of items, you can repeat what they say and add in extra words. “A coat.” “Yes that’s your red fluffy coat!”
- Discuss how the changing weather feels and sounds. You could talk about the feeling of the cold on your cheeks, or the wind in your hair.

Not sure what else to talk about?
When chatting together, it’s important to follow your child’s lead. Try to talk about the things they are doing and have noticed.
