Long Lankin by Lyndsey Barraclough
Set in the 1950s, this is a dark and Gothic tale about two sisters that find themselves uncovering the connection their family has to a very scary piece of local folklore. It’s a slow build mystery with lots of intriguing clues that will soon have you glancing nervously over your shoulder.
The Peculiar by Stefan Bachmann
This is a blend of fantasy and mystery that imagines an alternative, London where humans and faeries live together in an uneasy truce. Bartholomew is a “peculiar” which means he’s half human and half faery. He’s always been told “don’t get noticed.” But when he sees a young boy being abducted, he goes and does exactly the opposite which gets him into all sorts of trouble.
The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper
This is a classic children’s book and tells of young Will Stanton, who finds himself plunged into the battle between the ancient forces of Light & Dark. It’s set at midwinter and is really atmospheric, with lots of magic and mystery and snowy landscapes.
