The Peculiar by Stefan Bachmann
This is a blend of fantasy and mystery that imagines an alternative, London where humans and faeries live together in an uneasy truce. He’s always been told “don’t get noticed.” But when he sees a young boy being abducted, he goes and does exactly the opposite which gets him into all sorts of trouble.
The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper
This is a classic children’s book and tells of young Will Stanton, who finds himself plunged into the battle between the ancient forces of Light & Dark. It’s set at midwinter and is really atmospheric, with lots of magic and mystery and snowy landscapes.
