Twinkle twinkle little star

This popular nursery rhyme is a great way to help your baby enjoy music.

You can just sing to your baby. Or, if you like, you can do the actions in bold too.

This one goes:

Twinkle, twinkle, little star, (Open and close your first)

How I wonder what you are. (Open up your hands and shrug)

Up above the world so high, (Point at the sky)

Like a diamond in the sky. (Make a diamond shape with your fingers)

Twinkle, twinkle, little star, (Open and close your first)

How I wonder what you are. (Open up your hands and shrug)

For babies, songs and their actions are fun games. They’ll love hearing their favourites, especially if you sing it to them. They like to hear the voices of important people in their life.

Try doing the song through a few times. Repetition is comforting for babies. In time, your little one might be able to copy the sounds or actions.

You can make up your own actions and words if you like. Maybe use your baby’s name in the song to see if they recognise it.

Good to know

Hearing music helps your baby learn about sounds and meanings of words.
