Chat as you go

Waking up baby

Speaking to your baby helps them learn about the world around them. It also prepares them to learn to speak back.

Your baby loves the sound of your voice, so little chats throughout the day will make them happy. Your baby will understand a lot of what you say before they start to speak.

Choose something you do every day to chat about, for example, getting ready to go out. Make sure your baby can see you as you chat. It doesn’t matter what you say. Just tell your baby what you’re doing.

For example:

  • “We’re getting ready to go out now.”
  • “Look, Mummy/Daddy are putting on shoes.”
  • “Now it’s time to put on your coat.”
  • “We’re ready to go now.”

You can encourage other family members to chat to your baby too – it all helps. You can chat about anything. It doesn’t need to be important. You don’t need to stop what you’re doing while you speak, so you can do this activity even when you’re busy.

Good to know

This will help your child to learn to talk. It is from listening to your voice that babies learn to use language.
