Out-of-this-world biscuits

Star-shaped biscuits

Cooking is a useful way for children to practice listening and chatting. Reading the recipe, writing a shopping list for ingredients and visiting the supermarket all add to the great sense of achievement when the biscuits come out of the oven!

These delicious oat biscuits are the perfect excuse to get creative. Use a star-shaped cookie cutter or even try moons or planets for a different space twist!

Ingredients

For the biscuits:

  • 75g plain flour
  • ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 75g demerara sugar
  • 75g porridge oats
  • 75g butter
  • 1 tbsp golden syrup

For the icing:

  • 400g icing sugar
  • 3-4 tbsp water

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 160C / gas mark 3
  2. Place the flour in a bowl with the bicarbonate of soda
  3. Add the sugar and the oats and stir together
  4. Heat the butter and golden syrup in a pan
  5. Mix everything together and roll out the dough
  6. Cut into stars using a cookie cutter
  7. Place biscuits on a greased baking tray and bake for 7-15 minutes, until golden brown
  8. Cool on a wire rack
  9. To make the icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl and stir in enough water to create a smooth mixture
  10. Carefully spread the icing onto the biscuits using a knife and set aside until the icing hardens
  11. Enjoy!
