Write your own book review

Boy with book

Become a book reviewer

This activity gives your child the chance to be a book reviewer. Book reviews are a great way to encourage your child to:

  • reflect on what they have read
  • think about how that made them feel
  • what characters, scenes or themes stuck out to them?
  • Is it a book they have enjoyed that someone else might also like to read?

Creating a fun book review is also a great way to support their writing skills. It encourages them to think and chat about a book they like.

Start by chatting about the books they have read recently and encourage them to choose one book that they would like to create their review about.

Then think about the following steps:

Book title:

Reviewer name:

How many stars out of 5 stars would you give the book?

Genre: (Circle the ones that apply!)

  • Fiction
  • Non-fiction
  • Adventure
  • Fairytale
  • Horror
  • Sports
  • History
  • Music
  • Comedy
  • Comic / Graphic novel
  • Biography
  • Fantasy
  • other - tell us!

Describe the book in 3 words:

Who is your favourite character and why?

What was your favourite moment and why?

If they get stuck, try chatting to them about the book. Ask questions and give them time to think and respond. If they like or dislike something in a book, ask them why.

Once they’ve finished writing, you can give them the chance to be creative and make a poster for the book. They can add the title and author, as well as a picture of the front cover or the characters.
